I'm a bit older than you are, and there's a stereotype from the 80s
of aid being about starving black kids in Africa.
And that's an image that we don't use at the International Rescue Committee.
The image we use is of the African aid worker helping the African kid with a solution that gets them back on their feet, because these are the truth of the African story, and you know it as well as I do.
There is so much vibrancy.
There's a burgeoning middle class, but there's also struggle.
In Africa, there are two sides of the African continent at the moment.
Within countries, there are two.
You know, within Nigeria, you've got extraordinary explosion of economic and creative talent, and you have the other side of the equation.
So I think the race question is always there, isn't it?
But I think it's important that its dimensions...
and its nuance is well understood.
As I say, I think we don't want to present an image of the African kid desperate for the outreached white hand of help.
That's not the story that we tell.
The story that we tell is of African aid workers who work for us and for other organizations who are mobilized with solutions they've developed appropriate for their own continent.

How have you got no gray hair?
Well, look, I mean, where have debts gone up?
National debt's gone up a lot.
Well, yes, they've gone up in rich countries that haven't balanced their budgets, but they've gone up much more in poorer countries that are hosting loads of refugees.
