But he, even though Philipsman was gone, he was determined to just keep it driving.

And that's what he did.

But behind the race, we know everyone's so desperate.

And I think it was more today they understood the breakaway was going to go to the finish line.

They did yesterday, but then the green jersey thing messed it all up for everybody.

Why would they do that?

Before Alpe d'Huez, kind of tomorrow and the next day, two of the hardest stages in the whole race.

Yeah.

Kind of all the GC riders would like to kind of keep it a little bit on the down low.

And the GC teams, and especially UAE, they're falling to pieces.

They knew what it was because it was a stomach bug and he hadn't been able to eat on Tuesday night.

So they knew that yesterday he was just going to be so depleted that actually, although perhaps the bug was coming out the other side and felt better, even if he could eat well on Wednesday morning, he'd be so depleted that it's going to take him 24, 48 hours to kind of restock.

So that was a reason they just kind of actually kept him in the race because I think they'd seen he got through the night okay.

He was healthier, but they understood that he was going to be in for a very tough day.

And I think that's why he was able to actually stick with the front at the beginning of the stage because he was just running off glycogen from the morning, but he had no stores.

And so the moment those kind of stores run out and we see it so rarely, and actually I heard on French TV today, I think it was Jalabel, I think it was Jalabel saying it,

Riders don't bonk anymore.

They don't just run out of energy.

So it doesn't exist anymore.

And yesterday we saw Adam Yates basically just run out.
