And the only difference between modern humans and Papua New Guineans is the threshold at which they share their emotions and become subsumed by the collective.
And that was the biggest penny dropping, that we were not how I thought we were.
We were not individuals going about our lives, owning our thoughts and actions.
But so many of the things we do are these collective emotions that swill around through society that shape our thoughts unknowingly.
And as I've come to understand, unlike the things we do as individuals, there are memory locations in the brain, which essentially allow us to see cause and effect and learn from good and bad experience.
The thing about crowd behavior is there is no storage system to say you're even part of a crowd's behavior.
No lessons learned.
It can only be learned by external observation.
And that's essentially what my work has really been all about, whether it's in markets or
or whether it's in the cycles of conflict and empires, all of these things are external organizing mechanisms that have collectivity attached to them that most people are not aware of.
And I believe that we as individuals can only become true individuals if we're aware of those forces and emotions that are not our own, and at the same time can see human cyclical behavior to break out of our cycle of civilization, but also self-destruction at times.
So the more I watched
other people, the more I became aware that leadership wasn't something you could train people to do.
You can enhance their basic skills, but actually I think, and I've come to the conclusion, there is a leadership gene and there is a non-leadership gene that are just not designed to lead.
And it shaped my view because I was always individualistic, but I understood my individuality better.
And I also understood how when you're responsible for people, it's quite a lonely location, especially when their lives and deaths are at stake.
You need to be confident, decisive.
intelligent in the way you weigh up the situation and how you respond, and not just intelligent in the traditional way of quantifiable variables that you consider, but emotionally intelligent.
And now all of those things actually start with an understanding of ourselves.
I don't think you can manifest emotional intelligence unless you've journeyed inside yourself.
