And I'm going to share a little bit of this, I presume, very basic information as a preface to asking my next question, but also so all of the people listening have podcast-host

But in um thinking again of forsakenness, I think also of how after World War I, when the Ottoman Empire was partitioned, the resulting treaty called for there being a referendum in the Kurdish homeland. podcast-host

But Ataturk refused the treaty. podcast-host

But once the post-Ottoman Turkish borders are established and Kurdistan is carved up between four countries: Iran, Iraq, Syria, and Turkey. podcast-host

The history for someone like me, a novice, is quickly bewildering because Kurdish culture and language and rights are subordinated by four different countries and three different peoples, Turks, Arabs, and Persians, where the Kurdish language is suppressed and marginalized by Arabic, Farsi and Turkish, and sometimes criminalized. podcast-host

with forced mass relocations and displacement by the two Arab countries, brutal suppression by the Persian government during the Iranian Revolution, podcast-host

and both depopulation and eradication of villages in Turkish Kurdistan. podcast-host

But on top of that, any individual country that is suppressing its own Kurdish people, they're also at the same time often funding and assisting the Kurds in a neighboring country that they're in conflict with. podcast-host

And then that country as well, while suppressing their Kurdish population, could also be funding factions in another country. podcast-host

Not to mention how outside. podcast-host

Actors from the Soviets to the Israelis to the Americans intermittently support various Kurdish groups, perhaps most notably the Peshmerga fighters against ISIS. podcast-host

but almost always abandoning them when no longer needed. podcast-host

Betrayal seems to come in every direction. podcast-host

It doesn't explicate this, just as it doesn't explain the Halabjah massacre either. podcast-host
