For a long time, we would go to Europe in the wintertime and meet my in-laws on an island of my choice. podcast-host

And that winter we happened to be there during the Santa Lucia festivities, not knowing, but quickly learning that Lucia was the patron saint of the island of Sicily, and one of the earliest and most widespread of Christian cults of devotion that eventually spread all the way to Scandinavia. podcast-host

But we were amazed by them, the festivities around her statue, which is brought out from the church for this many-hour procession to the place of her martyrdom on the date of her death, where she remains for a week until the solstice when another procession returns her to the church for the year to come. podcast-host

And her relics, remains of her body, are part of the procession. podcast-host

Some some of her relics come from Venice, where they are are for the rest of the year for the festivities, but there are also pieces of her ribs are in the main silver statue that is carried by many men. podcast-host
