Nonetheless, it feels like your book also very actively invites this question, and it's a question about your fiction's relationship to reality.

Especially given how you've said that for a long time you didn't know if you were writing a novel or an essay.

To me, the most natural thing to say would be that your work is auto fictional, that it lives in the seam between the two, and that it plays quite overtly with that mystery between the real and the imagined, and with what language does to the real.

But you push back against this framing of autobiographical fiction.

Yet this question of auto fiction even enters the narrative of this book, where the mother is worried how her fictional narratives are affecting the actual memories of her daughter.

a daughter who often witnesses her mother's readings on her book tour.

And the daughter believes that she almost drowned in a guitar shaped pool in Memphis, Tennessee.

which didn't happen to the daughter in in the real life of the book, only in the narrator's fictional rendering of the daughter.

But this vignette in your novel is actually true out in the world.

So your engagement with autofiction within the book feels in some ways like it strengthens the case for it, not the reverse, as it sort of strengthens the correspondence between your daughter and the fictional daughter, which is sort of the play and the mischievousness of autofiction to begin with.
