Jack Moylan crossed in for the captain to score just after 6 minutes but Hamerhal Grimsonside couldn't add the all important second goal to kill off the game.
Moylan was shown a red card for a high challenge and a Jessam Gabber by Northern Irish referee Jamie Robinson just before the half time break.
Qatar themselves were reduced to 10 men, with sub Al-Muaz Ali being given his marching orders after he tussled with and then felled Jason Malumby off the ball.
