Clarence Seedorf 0:00
Football on Off the Ball.
Joseph Anang 0:02
We had that one campaign where we played Sweden, Italy. I think we smashed Sweden twice. We played Italy at home, drew, but had a really good game off them, so I knew there was a lot of quality in that thing.

Welcome along to Tuesday's Football Daily, I'm David Wilson. Coming up today, both the Ireland men's and women's international teams continue their preparations for a big week. Katie McCabe confirms her move across London from Arsenal to Chelsea and Tonda Eckert apologises to Southampton's fans, players and staff for Spygate. But first today, Carla Ward's Ireland side will continue preparations in Fota Island for their World Cup qualifier with the Netherlands in Cork on Friday evening, a game you can hear live commentary of on Off The Ball on Newstalk. Thank you very much. Arsenal goalkeeper Daphne van Domselaar and FC Twente's Jill Roard will still be highly fancied to win on Leaside. Suspended pair Denise O'Sullivan and Emily Murphy are two huge losses for Ireland, though both will be available for the France match.

Captain Keenan McCabe, who confirmed a move to Chelsea last night, is a bucking away from missing the trip to Grenoble next Tuesday. Head coach Ward says she and the players are taking it one game at a time.
Carla Ward 1:33
Absolutely not. One game at a time. Don't even talk about France. The only thing we're looking at, the only thing we're thinking about, the only thing we're prepping for is Netherlands. And once we've got the Netherlands out of the way, we'll see what position we're in.

Meanwhile, Ireland skipper Katie McCabe says she is excited for the next step in her career after swapping the red of Arsenal for the blue of women's Super League rivals Chelsea. McCabe was a free agent this summer after her contract with the Gunners expired. The doubler made over 300 appearances for the North London Giants after arriving from Shelburne in 2015, winning the Women's Champions League last year and the WSL in 2019. In January 2023, Chelsea made an offer believed to be in the region of £250,000 sterling for the 105-cap international that was knocked back by Arsenal.

What preparations are the Ireland Women's National Team making for their World Cup qualifier?

David Wilson 2:18
Ward says that McCabe is the best left-back in the world.
Carla Ward 2:21
Yeah, he would be a good fit for any team in the world. She's a top, top player. I've said it a lot, she's the best left-back in the world and no question about it. And I think up there last year, you've seen it, she was in every single WSL team of the year, no matter where you looked. So, Look, Kate will be a good fit for anybody and any team will be lucky to have her.
David Wilson 2:44
Yeah, I think personally, yeah, it's made me a better player.
Katie McCabe 2:57
I enjoyed a lot working with the coach. He's probably one of the best I've worked with in terms of the detail and the football and the training. So every single day I feel that I'm getting more and more and you're always on the ball, you're always touching the ball, which I've enjoyed. And I do think it's helped me improve and it's helped me to kind of, clean up on aspects of my game and get those small details. Yeah, obviously it's a different league to the WSL. I think the WSL has continued to improve and push on. I think since I left, obviously it's probably one of the best leagues in the world in terms of the investment On and off the pitch, you can't argue that.

What challenges does Ireland face ahead of their match against the Netherlands?

Katie McCabe 3:40
I think in Italy, there's probably still a lot of room for improvement in terms of the investment and the stuff off the pitch, definitely. But I think on the pitch, the level is just as high. And yeah, as I said earlier, I'm still enjoying it loads. And I see the benefits of playing over there. And yeah, it's not a bad place to live.
David Wilson 4:02
And remember, you'll be able to hear live commentary of that game with the Netherlands this Friday from 7 o'clock on Off the Ball and Newstalk and the Goal Out app. Stephen Doyle will be joined in the commentary box by former international Peril Slattery. The men's side are also in action this week.
