India ramped up its purchasing of Russian oil after the invasion of Ukraine and is now one of the world's biggest buyers.
It also sells Russian oil products onwards.
But in recent weeks, Indian companies have curbed their purchases.
It came after the Trump administration imposed 50% tariffs on goods from India and after sanctions were slapped on major Russian oil producers.
It's not clear how Putin can continue uninterrupted shipments of fuel to India, but energy analysts say there's been an increase in sanctions-avoiding behaviour on the high seas.
India insists the US is imposing a double standard, partly because other major buyers like China haven't been punished, while the US and Europe purchase Russian oil products through third countries.
