Except we're looking at it from a strange angle, right?

So we don't actually recognize it at first.

At first we think she's gone for a walk.

Something's happened to her.

I have to find her.

So it takes a while to reach that point of understanding.

Also just because, yes, our lives are lives full of disappearances, but we like to think they're full of continuity.

And, you know, in a way it pulls the rug out from under us.

So what happens to Izumi?

Yeah.

Well, she does come back for a moment, at least in the narrator's imagination, long enough to tell him that he's been eaten by the cats.

Yeah, yeah.

And in the story, he knows it's in his own mind.

But strange things happen, right?

So she could perhaps be actually saying these things and he be repeating them in his mind.

But there's also in that final scene, we have this sort of

Come back to what I said earlier, this idea of nature somehow conspiring.

He's looking at this evil moon, you know, which has allowed this to happen or somehow laid the groundwork for it earlier when it sent this cat running up the tree.

Which is a real story from Murakami's life, actually.

He wrote about it in a memoir we published about his father.
