I felt I needed to give her an option of being a good person.
Also, because I was reading a review of the book in which the reviewer said that the voice of Hostel was the closest to Fiona McFarlane herself.
And I thought, okay, well, she can't be all bad.
Yes, so that review said, wryly humorous and reflexive, she implicates herself in the grisly retelling of stories of horrific murders for entertainment.
And that is what's at the heart of the book, this entertainment level.
Yeah, and questioning, right?
why we are entertained by stories of danger and is it just schadenfreude is it that this didn't happen to us or is it that we're you know exploring the idea of evil one of those mysteries yeah that you were talking about exactly yeah yeah and again there's just so many levels and layers of mystery in this and I'm all for it yeah no I love it did you find yourself reading the story differently when you read it in context of the book

Fiona McFarlane is the author of two novels, The Night Guest and The Sun Walks Down, and two story collections, The High Places, which won the Dylan Thomas Prize, and Highway 13, a winner of the Story Prize.
She has been publishing fiction in The New Yorker since 2013.
Paul Yoon, who was one of the National Book Foundation's Five Under 35 in 2010, has published five books of fiction, including the novel Run Me to Earth and the story collection The Hive and the Honey, a winner of the Story Prize.
A new novel, Etna, will be published next month.
He's been publishing fiction in The New Yorker since 2023.
