Three times more expensive than any prison to operate in 1959 Alcatraz was. It needs about $250 million to shore up the infrastructure and utilities. All food and water has to be barged in. Sewage has to be barged out. The facility is almost 100 years old. And so I don't get it. In the days of Doge where we're cutting budgets, we got to find savings. Now we're going to what?
We're going to cut Medicaid and SNAP so that we can pour money into Alcatraz. First of all, have you been to Alcatraz recently? It literally is a, it's a rust box walking around. You need a tetanus shot just to go into the building. Do we still give tetanus shots or has RFK gotten rid of those? I can't, I can't keep up. And so listen, Where did the president get this idea all of a sudden?
Where did he get the idea? Perhaps he was watching Escape from Alcatraz, right? And I brought boards because some people are visual learners. Perhaps he was watching Escape from Alcatraz by Clint Eastwood. Actually, funny part about that, it was actually on television in South Florida. It was on PBS South Florida over the weekend when Trump was at Mar-a-Lago.
In fact, he made his announcement just hours after it aired. You know PBS, the programming that he's trying to get rid of, so just in case you're keeping up, right? It's two dolls for girls and zero Elmo's, okay? But maybe I'm wrong. Maybe it wasn't. Maybe it wasn't that. Maybe he was watching The Rock with Sean Connery. You know this one.
This is where Sean Connery goes back to Alcatraz because he originally escaped Alcatraz and needed like an expert on chemical weapons. Maybe the president was just Netflixing and chilling, like watching The Rock, which is not to be confused with The Rock. That's a different person. And then the president's really excited about these sharks. He's talking about all the sharks and the person escaped.
He lost his clothing. So sharks, they don't have laser beams on. They don't have laser beams, but maybe the sharks are going to be there. So this is just all ridiculous. But then all of a sudden after that, we heard like, oh, we're going to tariff the movies. Well, hold on a second. Why would we tariff the movies? This is where the president is getting his ideas from.
We can't tariff the policy idea making of the presidency. And look, I know what my colleagues are going to say. They're going to say, Jared, just let the president cook. This is 40 chess he's playing. And I'm going to say, maybe he's just watching late night movies, perhaps.

Mr. Speaker, I rise today with a simple but clear message. First of all, I just got to clear up a few things. Instead of the president cosplaying as the next pope, he may want to try to cosplay as an actual president of these United States. That means that he may have to do a little bit of research and decide that he wants to understand that he swore an oath.
And this oath was to protect and defend the Constitution. That is the oath that he was supposedly taking on January 20th, as well as we may want the president to look into what the Declaration of Independence was about. We may want him to understand that there was a foundational document as relates to self-determination of those who had recently gained their independence from Great Britain.
I would hope that he would maybe spend a few of these days in this first hundred days. And it is sad to say that it's his second term that he doesn't understand that the Declaration of Independence is about this idea that we are entitled to the right of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. And that's.
I think you're a little more than four years older than him.
I don't understand how you'll be able to look yourself in the face knowing that you voted to allow our federal government to detain and deport United States citizens simply because you do not want to vote against something that Donald Trump may support. Do you have a thought of your own Do you have a belief of your own or is everything literally just whatever Donald Trump tells you it should be?
The fact that Democrats and my colleague Representative Pramila Jayapal feel the need to even introduce an amendment that says ICE cannot deport U.S. citizens is batshit crazy. This should not even be a discussion. It is not even a question. U.S. citizens cannot be deported by ICE. It's the law. It's the Constitution. I will be astounded if Republicans vote no on this. You're back.
Mr. Chairman, you know, it must be tough. to be an authoritarian. You promise everybody in the world to get elected. Prices will go down on day one. No more inflation. We're going to end Russia's war on Ukraine. The world's going to respect us.
And then you get in, and even though you inherit an economy from your predecessor that's described as the envy of the world by The Economist magazine, you crash everything. The economy today is shrinking. The stock market is sinking. Inflation is soaring. $7 trillion in American retirements and wealth has been destroyed.
You've plunged us with your imbecilic tariffs into a trade war with the whole world, except, of course, for your bosom buddies in Russia. So now only 100 days in, with 100 unforced policy blunders, you're the most unpopular president at this point in your presidency in more than 80 years. Barack Obama stood at 69% in the polls. Ronald Reagan was at 73% in the polls. Truman was 87%.
And Franklin D. Roosevelt, 68%. But Donald Trump is at 39%. The lowest 100-day approval rating since polling began. He controlled the agenda for 100 days. He controlled the House. He controlled the Senate. He's got everything going for him. And his numbers are in the gutter.
Right now, we're cutting jobs as it relates to the federal government. Right now, because of the failed policies around tariffs, we know that we are looking at losing plants. They said that that was going to bring plants. They just announced that we had two auto dealers that were going to shut down approximately 40,000 jobs.
