You have to realize something, and I'm not defending families, but a lot of times back in the day, they would say, don't let your kids around Uncle Bill, or don't let your kids around Uncle Ralph, because they all knew that Uncle Ralph was a molester. For some reason, it was like a family secret. They never wanted to do anything. I think it was the embarrassment.
We worked and we interviewed so many child molesters back then, and we just couldn't come up with anything. And then eventually the leads start fading away.
He would have never came on the radar until he got arrested. He got arrested up in Virginia for molesting his grandkids and I think another kid. And of course, his wife really, really was upset. And as soon as he got arrested, she called us up and said, we need to look at him.
And she said that Ferris had made the statement one time to her that one of these days, one of those girls is going to go missing. And then after Christy went missing, he said, well, they'll never find her. She's down on Alligator Alley. So I went up to Virginia, and I interviewed him, and he denied knowing Christy. He never admitted anything.
He said he didn't know Christy, and he never said those things. And his attorney was going to get him off that he was guilty of this crime.
I went up to talk to him. If you ever interview a sex offender, especially a child molester, it's never their fault. It is never their fault. If you listen to some of these people, I mean, they would make you sick, really sick. That's why I never liked working child molestation cases. The sexual barriers were bad enough. The child molestations were really bad.
This person came forward and said that he molested kids and was very violent and that his septic tank was open and that he would always check it. The septic tank lid was busted and then he would empty it sometimes with a bucket. He would dump it.
We were there for a good week with them going through every bit of dirt that we took out. We had a septic tank company that cleaned out their truck so that it was spotless. And we put everything in there. And then when they dumped it, they went through every bit of it.
But they got down inside the septic tank and actually scraped the bottom of that septic tank and went through everything in that septic tank. And we come up with nothing.
I think it was more like slang from investigators back then because obviously there was a year plus before she was positively identified as who she was. So they would refer to the case as Frigid Frida and that kind of transferred down because even talking to older employees here, that's what they knew the case as.
I think just based on her positioning where she was found, obviously being nude, they assumed that there was probably a sexual component. And so they, as part of the autopsy back then in 76, they did take swabs, which are important today because obviously back then they weren't necessarily looking for DNA, but obviously that's what we're looking for today, right?
So they did do swabs that they would typically do in a sexual assault kit. And then they would have taken cuttings off the pubic hair.
So Michelle says that she thinks that Lisa kind of wanted to just be free and go out to the bar and have a good time. She suspects that she was using some drugs back then too, drinking a little bit. And so Michelle suspects that Lisa was maybe using some marijuana and then possibly cocaine and then potentially heroin as well as part of the party that night.
It doesn't sound like Michelle observed any actual use. That was just kind of her suspicion when she talked with investigators.
He describes how he got to talking to Lisa and Lisa ended up going back home with him that night to his apartment in Chicago and admits that they had sex consensually and that the last time he saw Lisa was the following morning, early afternoon, where she gets on the L train in Chicago to go back to her cousins in Oak Park.
David is very cooperative with investigators and gives any standards that they requested, which included hair samples and had hair samples, I believe in pubic hair samples.
I'm not sure if they took fingerprints, I would assume that they did, but he was very cooperative and those hairs were later submitted to the lab and they excluded him as being the source of the foreign hairs that were found on Lisa.
I think they were fairly confident, or I infer from the reports that they were fairly confident that he was not involved just because of the potential alibi and then also his level of cooperation.
It's pretty clear from reports that investigators discovered him pretty early on, and there's not really much, if any, follow-up that I can see that was done on the case.
No. There's so much that the investigators discovered maybe knew back then or suspected back then, and it is undocumented. So that combined with just simply the length of time. With any cold case, it's tough to look back and say, man, what were the investigators doing back then? And it's hard to know.
