The vanilla murder case began when Johnny Blake, a soda dispenser, was found dead in the basement of the store where he worked.

Vance and Dick Jackman, another soda clerk, discovered the body, and beside it, a syrup pump which Vance found to be marked vanilla.

Vance has found out that Tony Amrotti, a loan shark, had threatened Johnny.
