I think they're all of those things.
And that's why they're so shocking, because it's a very dark history now.
And when we look towards the history of psychiatry, we see such moments of darkness.
And I think it's understandable when we look towards that history that we can really sense that darkness.
What I found is the closer we approach
certain points in these institutions' histories, the more nuanced that sense becomes.
That despite the fact that these were undeniably very difficult places where people were often held against their will.

What's strange when you come to write the history, particularly of this particular period, the 1890s to 1920s, is that you start to notice that there is also human effort going into caring for the people that are there.
I found that quite challenging when I began to write this history.
It's much more complicated.
And I think that history is complicated.
Always, the closer we come to it, the more effort we come to really attend to the sources that survive.
And I think that that's something a lot of us will be familiar with.
From the 1926 census, we have a sense of the past.
kind of, for me anyway, kind of almost a cartoonish sense of the past.
