And yet things have changed so much in the interview.

And it's, I think, very important to pay attention to the nuance of that and to let our histories become more complicated because they are in as much as our own lives are complicated.

and sometimes difficult, but sometimes have moments of joy in them.

These institutions were similar.

There were people in there, uncomfortable as it may be for us sometimes to think about, who were genuinely doing their best for the people who were being held there.

Yeah, history feels very alive to me.

It really does.

I find it so interesting to study the past and to try to feel my way into what it might have been like.

And I think that's all we can hope for, really, as we reach towards the past is what might it have been like.

So I suppose I think of this book as based on a very true story.

And so there's truth there and there's also story in as much as we can pretend that we have a certain kind of truth when we look towards history.

And in this book, we follow a reader who, as I said earlier, isn't.

a qualified historian and I'm not but I think that that's kind of exciting sometimes to follow someone who really cares about a specific history as they try to muddle and puzzle their way through it as they try to find their way from contemporary Ireland where we have the ruins of this building

And they're moving into that particular site.

And they're also moving into the surviving documents that are there.

And through the pages of this book, Said the Dead, there is the sense of a lived history on the page.

And that felt, when I was researching the book, very much like a quest.

And I hope that comes across through the book.
