I was so moved by studying this institution and it really changed my life.
But being able to follow Dr. Lucia from her birth in Waterford all the way through her death.
to her education as a doctor.
And towards the day in the winter of 1896, where she was the person walking up the hill, seeing this long kind of turreted Gothic institution looming over her, striding into its shadow and walking into that building.
And she was given her own little rooms in there where she lived among her patients.
She fell in love with one of the other doctors there
They got married.
She gave birth to her children in the institution.
She devoted her life to those people.
Mm-hmm.
Well, yeah, I was astonished by this.
So, as I say, she began to work in the hospital, which was vast, Derval.
It was huge.
There were so many people there.
The images of it.
Oh, it was huge.
And for a young doctor approaching that, we can only imagine what that must have been like, you know.
But like any young doctor, I imagine...
That there's a sense of determination and a sense of wanting to help one's patients.
