So any MPs who are expressing surprise if that were the case, well, it's been there to read and understand.
In essence, we all remember that when Starmer came into power two years ago, they were facing a crisis in the prisons.
The prisons were full.
They needed to have an emergency release scheme established.
to free up capacity so that criminals getting sentenced could find a cell and go somewhere.
The end goal, though, however, was to completely radically reform how sentencing works and how releases work so that the government, in its words, could avoid forever another such crisis taking hold while at the same time building more prisons.

Now, in essence, what it involves is that at the moment, most offenders who are on a fixed term, so let's say a burglar gets four years, they'll get released from that jail cell after serving two years and then they'll serve the balance, the other half.

So just up until now, basically most offenders serve half of their time in prison and half in the community.
Under the new scheme, those offenders would only serve a third in prison.
