Nelson always comes and often helps in the field, and especially with the senior leaders.

And he allows me to come into MIT and do a little bit of teaching once in a while from the practitioner point of view.

And in the conceptual development, I think we're equal partners, bringing both of those pieces together.

Let me take a shot at that.

And I'll just give an analogy.

It's the same analogy we use for visual management, but I think it works also for the difference between how we think about static work design and dynamic work design.

By the way, a process design is a static work design because it's telling you what's supposed to happen.

It doesn't change.

It's a guide.

It's a conceptual guide.

But think about the difference between, think about an air traffic controller.

So a static design would be, we print off a spreadsheet

once every five minutes.

And on the spreadsheet, it tells you the name of the plane, the altitude, the latitude, longitude, the airspeed, all these things.

And it gives the air traffic controller a dashboard, one-shot view of what's been happening the last five minutes, where the planes are.

And then from there, the air traffic controller has to guide them in.

That's a dynamic as a static viewer taking a snapshot and it's like we get a monthly review of the dashboard or the weekly review of the numbers.

we're not really in touch with what's happening, as opposed to the radar screen which actually shows that planes moving and it gives us so much more.

information of what's really happening that we can actually we can interact with the work in real time and get it in real time.

And so that's that's the core difference for me is the difference between the monthly or weekly report.
