One of my favorite covers is of another artist who is a problematic fave and an artist who I do love a lot, which is Drake.
Hmm.
Especially I love Drake's earliest stuff, which is I think pretty widely agreed upon that that's some of his best.
And this cover is of his twenty seventeen song Passion Fruit from the album More Life.
This is the original Passion Fruit.
So the cover that I think is better is from the DJ and electronic musician Yeiji and it's from the same year, twenty seventeen, and also called Passion Fruit.
So the song is broadly about loving from a distance and yearning for someone.
And the way that Yeiji turns it into this atmospheric dreamy trance and she takes the hook, passionate from miles away, and turns it into a portmanteau, basically, of passion way.
And I think that shortening of that hook gets at the thesis of the song in such a beautifully effective way and just pulls me right in.
Yeah, yeah.
She softens the edges of the song.
Yes.
Yeah.
She she takes these grand, undying proclamations of love that honestly Drake does a lot and spins it into a different light of what it can look like when it's more private, when it's more daydreaming.
There's also that.
