I promised you I would write in this journal every morning, and I didn't even make it past two.

I just got busy with work and painting the bedroom.

I went with sky blue.

Bye bye, goose shit green.

If it makes up for anything, I had a really strange dream last night.

You know how your body falls asleep first and then pulls your brain down with it?

I was right there, my muscles heavy, my thoughts getting harder and harder to string together.

Warm.

Dark.

Home.

But as I was just closing my eyes, cold air tickled the back of my neck.

Pine-scented, with a hint of silt.

It whispered against each little divot of my spine, one by one, like gentle, teasing fingers.

I heard faint sloshing, rhythmic, like the heavy footfalls of some approaching creature.

Brackish water lapped at the soles of my feet, the curve of my back, my shoulders.

I started to panic.

I couldn't move my body, couldn't get away.

But though the water rose, it never went any further over me.

It was like I was a dam, holding an entire lake back with just my shoulder blades.

Frigid air ghosted over my prone body like a whisper.
