And so the amount of aid, of grants that they're willing to give students to lower their out-of-pocket costs has increased every year for the past several years.
So they call it the net cost now.
So you may see a sticker price for a private school of $58,000, but the average student may be paying $34,000.
And that number may be dropping.
As the supply of students drops and the demand for what these schools are selling drops.
Schools have for a long time relied on international students who pay full freight.
They don't generally get a discount.
And COVID really disrupted the number of students who could come from overseas or who are willing to come from overseas.
And in some instances, that was a really significant factor.
financial setback to schools.
So schools are very closely watching how that recovers, and if it ever does recover, because that can mean millions of dollars to some of these larger schools.

Yeah, this gap is forming.
It's been forming for about five or six years, and it seems to be breaking out along the lines of quality.
For this analysis, we use the WSJ rankings as a proxy for quality.
The rankings look at return on investment, so how much kids are earning when they graduate 10 years after they start college, how many of them are defaulting on their loan, how much money is being invested into their education by the schools themselves.
And when you look at this
What it turns out is that the schools that are ranked by the journal in the bottom fifth have begun to see an enrollment decline, while essentially the top 80% of the schools continue to grow as they have for decades now.
There's a lot of forces that are converging at the same time to create this gap.
