So let's go ahead and use Karakol as an example and focus on how this city declines.
One of the key things is that there's this long period from 680 to 798 where there's a lot of wealth sharing.
And so you see a strong group of people that are sort of middle status.
People have access to jade.
They have obsidian.
They have marine shell.
They have all these things that are being traded in from elsewhere.
So they're requiring trade networks to do their daily life.
Yeah, there's one or two monuments in the middle, but for the most part, it's sort of a cessation of monumental writing.
It starts in 680.
And then, on the other end, it's bracketed by the return of Haute-Cohille, who comes in at 798, and he comes in and tries to be this really strong sort of, well, let's just call him a strongman kind of classic period Maya king.
And it doesn't work.
He tries that for 22 years, and then he ends up adapting this larger alliance network.
And what you see in this period is you see a breakdown of that strong group of people in the middle.
You start to see haves and have-nots.
Some people getting all the long-distance trade goods, others are not.
And when this happens, you start to see different patterns among the elite.
So it almost looks like more wealth sharing in the upper class, with less stuff trickling down.
And as that happens, you can imagine, you know what your grandparents were talking about.
They were talking about all of this wealth, all these nice things.
