It doesn't take long for vegetation to grow here.
And so within eight years, this would already look pretty decrepit.
You'd still see remnants of the plaster.
It would have been faded.
Colors might be dripping off the side a little bit.
Some of the stucco could have fallen apart, but people were coming here.
And then after 950, 1000,
People do not come here again for the site until people are coming to investigate hardwoods in the forest to get cedar and mahogany for consumption in the British market after the 1900s.
And I think the key thing is, while the city itself here, or in other Maya cities, do collapse in the classic period, from the perspective of the city, the people themselves persist.
And so you see the later generations, they move elsewhere, they take some traditions with them, but when they move, they have choices to make new traditions, to change the models of Maya society.
And that's part of why the post-classic looks a bit different.
But we should get one thing started.
When did you first come here?
Well, so for my first trip out to Caracol, it's about two months old.
I was not quite as helpful back then.
And so you've been coming pretty much every year then for what?
Well, except for minus college and then a little bit there.
But yeah, for decades I've been coming on and off.
So yes, exactly.
One of the biggest cities in the Americas before Europeans.
