Before we get to death, I think it's important to think about actually how plants can be very long lived.
So some plants live a very, very long time, like many thousands of years.
But of course, plants do experience death frequently.
Sometimes it's due to natural causes.
So when a plant is a seedling, they're very vulnerable.
They could easily dry out.
They can get overcrowded or shaded by other plants.
They could get eaten by an animal or just trampled on.
By the time a plant gets to an adult stage, maybe they have a lot more resilience.
Maybe they've developed some wood and they're a little bit more hardy.
They can still be susceptible to death.
And that could come from a range of things like disease.
There are boring insects that can drive a plant to death.
But sometimes it's actually...
At the hands of people, plants often die when their habitat has been modified or destroyed.
We're living in a time of biodiversity extinction.
And so when you think about plant death, it actually relates to this very phenomenon.
