We use the term mutual regulation.
They pretty much mean the same.

But a child who's pacing back and forth by himself or herself going, Everything's okay, don't worry.
Are you okay?
Everything's okay.
That could be the example you gave as self-regulation.
But asking you to say it is reassure me and it's mutual regulation.
And and you mentioned relying on parents.
Th this really makes the point of a team approach so obvious because there may be other people on the team who've seen something or have interpreted it in a particular way.
