But in 1911, a bill was proposed that would have them banned from working on the surface too.
And that bill was supported, in fact, by the mining union leaders themselves.

And Eva pushed back strongly against all of this, just as she had when attempts were made to restrict the employment of barmaids.
And crucially, she didn't just argue on behalf of these women.
She made sure that their voices were heard.
She spoke at meetings alongside the workers themselves.
And, you know, there are newspaper notices where she appeals, for example, for money to allow her to bring a delegation of female pit brow workers to London to allow them to make their case in person.
And she actually spent a few days working in a coal mine herself just to prove the point that women were more than capable of doing the job.
That's right.
Yeah.
I mean, you know, maybe in Ireland she would have been, you know, seen as very much part of a separate upper class.
But when she came to Manchester, she was living among the poor.
She was, you know, speaking to them as equals.
And I think that is recognised in the strong friendships that she developed.
She did, yeah.
And again, views that anticipated a lot of the arguments made by later generations of feminists.
