He's trapped in boyhood.
And it's recognized this is difficult for him.
But he's sitting there.
There's a wonderful scene where he's crossed with the suitors.
He more or less sits on a step and sulks.
And he's thinking about, wouldn't it be lovely if my father came home and dealt with them?
So he has no agency.
And it takes the goddess Athena to come and say, go find out what happened to your father and then become a man.
So the first four books, we have this happening that he actually does go and look for information.
But he's also given this very, very strong role model, the parallel coming home of Orestes, who is the son of Agamemnon.
Agamemnon was the leader of the Greek army.
He arrived home and was met by his wife and her lover and was killed.
And Orestes then had...
So this parallel is explicitly made and this model is being forced on Telemachus to some extent.
He hears it repeatedly.
And so there's always this worry as the two stories come together.
when his father is alive, how is that going to play out?
Because it's the nostos, it's the homecoming, but Agamemnon's homecoming was really, really horrible.
And no son wants to, you know, kill his mother, I hope.
And it does work out well.
