I actually get the impression with the UK that the government doesn't even know how many people are in the UK.
This has been speculated for a long time, actually, that the population of the UK could be as much as 10 million higher than is officially recorded in the census.
Supermarket data famously seem to indicate consumption patterns within supermarkets
