Yes, you raise a really interesting point and one that's kind of very clear within the literature, which is that dark tourism for some commentators is not dark tourism unless it's something that took place within living memory, within the recent past.

If you're at a visitor attraction that's dark tourism, unless people are visibly moved and often upset, then perhaps it's not dark tourism unless

And the distinction I sometimes draw in lectures is the contrast between a site like Pompeii in Italy and all of these other sites we've mentioned, like Ground Zero and Auschwitz and all these places.

I get the students to split into two groups and have a debate about the morality of a site like Auschwitz operating as a visitor attraction.

I think it's really a history lesson, a lot of these dark tourism sites.
