But then when I looked at the whole picture...
I felt, my wife and I felt, the scaffolding, all I needed to do, we knew the questions to ask, is ask these admissions people two, three questions so he had the information that he can then run with.
And so, again, I'm not saying I did it right, but I'm using that as an example for everyone to know.
This is an 18-year-old, and most people would say, hey, you know what?
That's on them.
They should do it.
But when we're scaffolding, and I've had years of scaffolding, you just, I feel, have to be thoughtful about what's your own
Like chips in the game here, how much of it is our stuff and how much of it is our child's development so we can help them get to that next place in a way that is somewhat collaborative as opposed to micromanaging or not doing anything at all and then floundering.
It is.
And as I was going through that process, and even as I'm telling the story, it's so funny, you should say, How to Raise an Adult, that book, because not only am I staring it on my bookshelf right now, that voice was in my head.
I'm like, because she talks about all those Stanford parents.
I'm like, oh my gosh, am I, I don't want to be that person.
And that's what I was wrestling with, which was the, am I doing too much?
Am I enabling?
You know, and I'm consulting with a few people to figure it out.
And then at the end of the day, I just had to follow
my instincts given the situation.
And then once I could give him the baton from that information, he was able to run with that.
Right.
So it was like I knew that was the obstacle.
