The promise was a social security system, a welfare state, expansive education system.
There was a promise around wages and particularly the professions, access to the professions.
There was a promise around meritocracy.
And to a certain extent, social mobility was rising between that period of 1950 to 1980.
So there was a promise which, to a large degree, for a number of people, not all, and this is the important point, was delivered.
The key thing here is the evolution of the promise.
Because when we're talking about then their kids, what do baby boomers do as parents?

Everyone talks about how easy it was to buy a house.
It was still really difficult, particularly for women, but actually it was really hard to hold on to a house, particularly with the repossession surges of the 1990s.

So you suddenly get this idea of home ownership being a right.
