The one dead ringer for a female dinosaur is a special deposit of bone called medullary bone.
This is something that birds do as well.
So birds that are about to lay eggs, what we call gravid females, will have an extra layer of calcium in their bone that they use to make the eggshells.
So that has been found in maybe three dinosaurs ever.
And so those individuals that medullary bone is found in for sure are females.
But your chance of finding a gravid female that has that are pretty rare, again, in the fossil record.
Yeah.
Oh my gosh.
So I mean, that is potentially one thing that we could do eventually at Pipestone Creek is to do the histology.
So basically study the bone and see if any of our bones have got vagillary bone.
But again, that would tell us that that limb bone or that hand bone, that vertebrae belong to a female.
but it's not linked to the skull, which would be unfortunate, because the skull is kind of where we would see that variation, most likely.
