At CIA, we used to have a saying, an analyst that says, do not look for your keys under the lamppost, right?

Don't look only where you can see.

So if you're not seeing something, it's probably because you don't know where else to look.

So one thing we used to do is say,

What do we know or think we know?

What can we see and not see?

And if we're not finding the answer, it must be the opposite of what we can see.

It's in the negative space, right?

So I was once involved in the hunt for a very senior

Islamic terrorists whose name I will not mention.

And I was employed by CIA when I was at NSA.

And I went to them and I said, you haven't found this guy.

Where do you expect him to be?

And where do you not expect him?

Where do you want him to be?
