And Homer does it very cleverly by sending Odysseus there.
So the story comes from Odysseus' mouth.
which creates an interesting paradox.
On the one hand, this is a valid source.
This is an epic hero telling you their story, but it's a source that's not verified by the poet himself.
So the poet at no point claims that this is the narrative that he gets as an inspiration from the gods.
In other words, he never verifies the narrative as true.
And that creates an incredible ambiguity because anything that is said in Hades is completely free of judgment.
You can say whatever you want,
And because it's just a story that comes from a character, it cannot be judged as true or not.
It's really left to your discretion.
Whereas everything else in the Odyssey and the Iliad cannot be challenged.
It comes directly from the muses.
So I think that's the main innovation about the use of Hades, at least in the Odyssey.
There's much more to talk about, of course, but it might get too grim.
That's an interesting question.
You see, it does in a sense, but not in a positive way.
I grew up on an island that half the population claims to be the Homeric Ithaca, even though it's called Cephalonia.
The Homeric Ithaca, at least the island that carries the name, you can see it
from the CISO is very close by.
