This thing called life and death, and that has always

In some ways, it always makes you question what you do in your society because you know that other worlds are possible.

So, you know, when my dad died, the choice that was open to us was burial or cremation.

But burial or cremation are not the only ways that people handle bodies, right?

And that's, you know, multiple different ways of things like, for example, natural burial.

So a very big movement in the UK, in the US, in Europe, not to have coffins.

right?

Not to dig really deep graves, put marble headstones, or not even to have a permanent grave, but to lay somebody to rest, perhaps in a shroud, perhaps in a wicker casket, perhaps in a meadow, and use that burial as actually a form of regenerative conservation for a woodland, for example.

Or you see these kind of new ways of being with the dead emerging

in the US around things like composting or like, you know, recycling the body, water-based cremation, things that have a smaller environmental footprint.

And, you know, on the one hand, there's this kind of

calculation, I suppose, about carbon and, you know, what's the lightest footprint and trying to be greener in death.

But I think it's part of a broader movement which is also about, well, how do we have a different death care system, right?

In Korea, to give one example, funerals are mostly held in hospitals.

Really?

Yeah.

So you'll go to a hospital, and they'll treat you, but if you do happen to die, they'll keep the body there at the hospital as a morgue, and then the funeral ceremony will be held, like, in the first floor of the hospital.

And so the hospital becomes a place that you're both born and die.

Right?

And it's more of a circular idea of life.
