In that situation, it was.
I went into the shop, picked up a can of soft drink and asked for cheap smokes.
And they pulled out a packet of – it was Hongta Shan cigarettes, which is a high-end Chinese brand –
and just handed it over the counter to me.
The total for that came out to about 17 bucks, so two bucks for the soda, 15 for the cigarettes.
Has there been any raids on the retailers?
So that was what we heard last week was there were about 21 search warrants executed, I believe.
And that was the big action that they've taken now in raiding, actioning the information that they've been building up since the start of the year, in some cases, they've said.
It does.
It does.
And it's... And, you know, one of the reasons that the excise rate goes up is to...
disincentive for people to smoke.
And, you know, we have our smoke-free goals here in New Zealand, and that's been a big push for getting people off cigarettes.
One of the things that I've heard from, say, compared to our Australian counterparts, is we've made vaping products a much more viable alternative to smoking, whereas in Australia, I believe they've been restricted in the same way at the same time as cigarettes have.
So all that you've got left are
black market options that are cheaper, unregulated, readily accessible, compared to the inaccessibility of your regulated, legitimate products.

One of the things that has actually been a bit of a point of contention throughout the sort of investigation that I've done
into New Zealand's black market tobacco is the exact scope of it.
And that was something that Customs touched on last week as well.
