And then mother dies when she's in, I guess, 10th grade.

And she's bereft.

And her older brother and sister go off to college, leaving her isolated in the stone house with her father.

who is very different from her and has expectations of her that she doesn't want to live up to.

He still cares about her.

I mean, he always was concerned she wasn't taking care of the horses, and that was a responsibility that would show that she could do things, but she wasn't doing it.
