Sure.
Just a small ask, right?
So my name is Kristen Kirkland.
I am a family medicine physician by training.
I also train in public health.
And so that means that I look at health from a population view as well as on the personal level when it comes to
making health decisions or looking at patterns that contribute to our life.
Because as we know, our health depends on the water we swim in, our environment as much as it depends on individual factors too.
And I guess if I back up, I am from the Midwest.
I was adopted in a private infant adoption, same race, and technically it was open.
Functionally, it was definitely not.
So that's something we could maybe talk more about.
But as I studied public health, I had a special interest in human trafficking.
And I searched survivors of trafficking throughout my public health year and then educated fellow health care providers about identifying and intervening in cases of trafficking in the health care space.
Because I was shocked to find in my studies that 88% of people who were surveyed who had been victims of trafficking had encountered some
part of the healthcare industry during their time being victimized.
And so that was a big window of opportunity to intervene and maybe help end someone's suffering or help them find freedom again.
But the more I learned and the more I educated about what trafficking is and how we define it on a legal level, the more I realized that a lot of the circumstances surrounding my adoption actually met that definition too, which was shocking for me.
It took me a while to realize.
