And the whole time the caves have been sitting there recording like an underground archive.
So how can we put that to work?
And one of the key things we're really interested now is it's not just extinct animals in the deposits.
A lot of the species are either still around today or became extinct very soon after colonization.
So we have this archive of threatened species and we can look at those records and project forward if we understand what drove particular organisms to extinction in the past.
It can help us save threatened species today and understand how they might respond to climate change in the future.
