The Beastie Boys played second to last and Smashing Pumpkins were the headliners.

Five minutes into Smashing Pumpkins, Walter and I looked at each other and said, let's get out of here.

That festival was amazing back then, but I still cannot understand how the Smashing Pumpkins were the headliners over the Beastie Boys.

Fun fact, I heard on one of those MTV shows that the name for Hello Nasty, which is a Beastie Boys record, came from a receptionist answering the phone and saying, hello, Nasty, the business was part of their production or management team and the full name had the word nasty in it.

First of all, yes, Hello Nasty, the Beastie Boys record,

was uh named after their publicity their pr firm called nasty little man and they would answer the people would answer the phone hello nasty and that's and that's where that that phrase came from when i was a music critic in my former life um worked with nasty little man a lot they represented a lot of like really really big great artists like the beasties and

and Beck and Paul McCartney and Foo Fighters and all the heavy hitters were with Nasty Little Man, it seemed.

And also the guy that ran that company was named Steve Martin, but it wasn't the Steve Martin.

It was Nasty Little Man's Steve Martin.

Anyways, Smashing Pumpkins headlining Lollapalooza.

I think that there was some sort of shenanigans there with how they got to headline Lollapalooza.

I think Nirvana had pulled out and then they went in the top slot.

And looking back, you go, why?

Why would Smashing Pumpkins be there?

I agree with you over the Beastie Boys, just because the Beastie Boys seem to have so much more lasting cultural resonance.

But remember the time, this is 94.
