And if I bring it up to them, they will say, oh, but I'm not homeless.
And I think it's because of this enormous, enormous stigma that has been placed on this experience.
And this experience is just all too common, but people really carry it with them and really don't want that label to stick to them.
Yeah, I mean, I think Molly's exactly right.
I think the Department of Education has a very different, more expansive definition where kids who are doubled up are considered homeless.
So then you wind up really confusing the public a lot because like my school district will say this is a number of kids who are homeless.
And then the city will give a number that's like...
a third of that and say, this is all the people, including the kids who are homeless and people are like, what are you talking about?
So it is a very like liminal sort of confusing, you know, policy wonky kind of thing, which doesn't make sense.
Yeah, I mean, I think there are a couple things.
One is that
All throughout this country, their rent is too damn high, right?
Like we've increased the rent and rent and rent and rent and increased the cost of housing and the cost of living.
Minimum wage jobs haven't kept up.
Things like unemployment, disability payments, you know, no benefits have kept up.
There's been this huge widening of this gap.
The start of the pandemic, I was doing some COVID tracking before we even had COVID tracking, like the first few days.
And I started to call around saying,
to households where somebody tested positive.
And in those households, I was asking, oh, how many bedrooms do you have?
