Well, I think it's been made really clear by various European NATO member states that have declassified intelligence reports that Russia might become a real threat to NATO in the next two to three years.
And what concerns me with regards to this NATO summit and with regards to the European security picture is that I absolutely agree with Richard that unfortunately the United States has made clear that they are less and less interesting.
Interested in European security.
Some members of the administration are even quite disdainful of Europe in a way that is very concerning.
But at the same time, even though Europe has made a huge effort in terms of increasing defense spending and increasing the purchasing of new capabilities, a lot of these capabilities are not necessarily going to come online in that same timeline.
And so if we have to assume that for the reasons that Richard outlined, that Russia is going
to uh try it on with NATO over the next two to five years, perhaps because they have to keep an external adversary going, uh perhaps because they want to see how ironclad Article five really is, then Europe is not in the best position to do that.
And uh that's a real challenge, especially at a time when unfortunately NATO summits are increasingly focused on
managing President Trump and his moods rather than focusing on how to make real progress.
And you use that phrase Russia might try it on.
What does trying it on mean?
It could mean a range of things.
So we know that we are already subject to a lot of different hybrid attacks.
And these hybrid attacks have intensified and could unt intensify further.
And that really means everything from cyber attacks on critical national infrastructure to
physical sabotage.
We've seen some really interesting cases there where Russia, Iran and others essentially use social media channels to hire young people or people who could essentially for whom a a small amount of money is relatively attractive for taking on a large risk, to then um carry out a range of sabotage tasks, whether that's setting something on fire or taking out vandalism um on a synagogue
Or something like that.
So really quite disruptive to the fabric of society.
Or you have just widespread disinformation that ends up meddling in elections or that ends up destabilizing society.
