All the things we learned as kids aren't
helpful to us.
I talk about in another book I'm working on with Joe DeSena, Why We Quit, one of the things our parents used to say is, if you start something, you got to finish it.
Well, that's not great advice.
Like not everything you start, you should finish.
There's plenty of things you should stop immediately.
So I think that we get steeped in a culture that talks about, you know, you want to have high self-esteem.
You want to go into this, you know, event as I'm the best and nobody's going to beat me.
No, I want to go into the event as...
I'm me and I am going to be the best me I can possibly be.
And I'm in a competition where a competition, if you really look at the Latin root of competition, it is to bring out the best in each other.
It's not about winning or losing.
It's a non-zero-sum concept.
Competere means to bring out the best in each other.
So you're competing with someone else who loves what they do and you're bringing the best out in each other.
So it's partly language.
Language affects our thoughts.
And again, like I said, thoughts, your brain is a thought generator, continuously generating thoughts.
It's like, you know, the ticker tape on the old Times Square newsreel.
But not all those thoughts are real and not all those thoughts are facts.
