When you are a five-month-old baby inside your mother's womb, you have six to seven million eggs.

But by the time you're born, you only have one to two million.

By the time you start your first period, you'll have less than half a million, and you will only ovulate about 400 eggs over your lifetime at most.

So that's wildly different, right?

Why do we have millions if we're only going to ovulate 400?

The way I like to think about it is that this is a vault, and every single month you have a group of eggs that comes out of the vault.

And what's really interesting is that when the vault is more full...

More eggs come out every month.

So you are losing more than just one.

And now when we think about the menstrual cycle, what is happening is that each egg grows inside one of these nice clear follicles, and the brain's going to send out FSH, or follicle-stimulating hormone, which is going to stimulate just one of these to grow and to ovulate.

And that's the one you'll ovulate, and everything else just dies.

Now the next month, what's gonna happen?

You're gonna have another group coming out of the vault.

Okay, so our vault is constantly getting emptier.

And what's really fascinating is that when the vault is more full, you lose more every single month.

But as the vault starts to get emptier, as time goes on, as we get older, we have fewer coming out every month.

And why is that important?

That's a really important concept for women.

Because when there's fewer eggs outside the vault, it is a reflection that we're starting to get to the end of what we call our ovarian reserve, or the number of eggs we have remaining.

Many women think about egg freezing or IVF as this guarantee, and I said earlier that it's not.
