I mean, really it was Brendan who was advising the prime minister on that.

And look, I wouldn't have couched in those terms at the time.

I simply said yes, but it was the first time that I'd stopped.

And I mean, usually when an opportunity like that comes in front of my lap, I'd say yes straight away.

As a sense of duty?

As a sense of duty, because in these sort of careers where you sort of start to leapfrog and go higher and higher and higher, it's often because you say yes to the opportunity.

It's not necessarily – and you say yes quickly.

But on this occasion –

You know, I put down the phone.

I said, Paul, I'm on a ward round.

I'm going to call you back.

And I called my wife straight away and said, listen, this is going to be big.

Am I in the right frame of mind to do it?

You asked her that?

Yeah, I asked her that.

I was asking myself that question, but she'd obviously not.

I'd gone through a bit of a troubling time in my mental health in the previous six months.

And I had to ask myself, am I the right person to do this at this time?

Now, fortunately, I was on well on- Am I fit for purpose?
