Access to diagnostics and diagnostic imaging, including MRI and CT scans, is very important to be able to either one, make a diagnosis, or two, to reassure patients that they don't have a nasty or a worrying diagnosis.
During the pandemic, ironically, our access to diagnostic imaging improved and was very good.
And over the last number of years, we've seen that disimprove again.
And we're now seeing patients around the country
waiting for significant periods of time for both MRI and CT scans results in delayed diagnosis.
So I think it's fairly common sense and common knowledge that the earlier we diagnose a condition, the better the outcomes.
Yeah, well, there are lots of, I suppose, effects or sequelae of these delays.
One, we're seeing patients who are worried and waiting.
Two, we're seeing patients who are
you know, having multiple GP visits for painkillers, for reassurance, for requests, then the other thing is that there is certainly a health inequality around this, that, you know, if you can afford to pay, you can afford to access the scan.
And as you know, Brian, my main practice remains in Knockmahiny in Cork, where unfortunately a lot of my patients cannot afford to pay for scans.
And this leaves us with a dilemma in how we can access the diagnostic imaging for them.
