My name's Dr.
Penny Sheehan.
I'm uh an obstetrician from the Royal Women's Hospital.
And amongst other things I've been doing, um for the last three years I've been the clinical lead for the maternity and newborn improvement team at Safer Care Victoria.

So um from the RANSCOG guideline, the key principles are providing information on patient care in a way that they can understand.
And of course
Although that's a simple phrase, um, there's a whole lot in there about
the patient's background and their literacy and their language and their culture and so forth.
So it's actually quite a complex point.
Um providing an opportunity to consider and discuss the information with you.
And um that providing an opportunity to consider, you should also think that that potentially provides the opp it potentially is providing the opportunity for the patient to go away and consider the information that you've been given, which is another another critical point with it.
The next point is about the patient n who doesn't have capacity to give informed consent.
And uh it's critically important that we all as clinicians understand what constitutes capacity and how we can assess that.
And certainly though for those of us working in the public service, um the assessment of capacity usually involves a multidisciplinary team.
There are people who can help and support you.
Um
neuropsychology, psychiatry, there are usually ethics committees, um, senior staff should all be involved in that idea.

The next point is something that as a primarily public hospital person um uh I was surprised by, but it is also relevant for the public hospitals.
