Prior to that, we don't see as much use.
In one particular cave I had an opportunity to be going into, we found over 49,000 human bones.
49,000.
And if you think about how many bones a human has and you translate into 49,000, that's a lot of people that we're looking at.
And most of those were in fact younger individuals, younger children, which is something that we see a trend all the way until Spanish show up that the Maya were preferring to have younger individuals as part of that sacrificial offering to the rain gods himself.
Yes, a bit of innocence, but also it's an ultimate sacrifice for the parents to help the community.
It's hard to say, so heavily calcified here, but just the fact that there's several pieces might indicate it's a younger individual because different parts of the bones in the skull start to fuse at different parts or different times in the year or years.
And it could be because it's coming apart that it might be a younger individual and it's not all the pieces are fused together.
