Right.

I also think what it's a sign of is no one wants that.

I think I'll start by saying that Matariki is spread right across the Pacific and Polynesia.

It's actually found on every single island throughout Polynesia.

And so our ancestors and our relations from across the different islands used it as a marker to tell them when the new year started and what they could expect for the impending season.

When they left here and came here, they went from a season that is dry season and a wet season to here, which it's cold and colder.

So they came to this really cold place and they noticed here it rises in the morning.

in the shortest day, around the shortest day of the year, in the middle of winter, and they know that's the marker of the new year.

So they see that cluster of stars.

I saw it this morning.

Even coming up to Auckland this morning, I saw it in the sky and I know where it's positioned in the sky that we are in the period where we celebrate the new year.

So in essence, it's a marker, but it's become not just a marker of new year, but a marker of culture and identity and connection.

Because the three values and principles that underpin it are we celebrate and acknowledge our loved ones that we've lost.

We celebrate who we are today, you know, feasting and entertainment.

And the last thing we do is we look to the future.

And so that in a nutshell is what Matariki is, not just as a holiday, but the whole concept of Matariki.

He's overpaid.

Because I feel like that feeling is out there.

It's definitely.

Our ancestors understood that when the environment begins to shut down, animals aren't moving, it's colder, you've got longer nights and shorter days.
